What is a Homestay?

A homestay is a unique opportunity for a player to stay with a local family while he is playing baseball in the Hawaii Winter Baseball League. It is an opportunity for the player to learn about the local Hawaiian culture and lifestyle.



What kind of room do I need to provide?

You must provide a private bedroom with a window furnished with a bed including linens, blanket, and pillows, a dresser or closet, a mirror, towels, and a trash can.



Does the player need his own bathroom?

No. The bathroom can be private or it can be shared by the family.



Do I need to provide meals to the player?

No. The player knows that meals will not be provided by the host family. However, you can make your own arrangements with the player. You can also extend kitchen privileges to the player so he can make his own meals or snacks.



Can I host more than one player at a time?

Yes if you have the accommodations stated above.



Do I need to provide a house key to the player?

Yes.



Can the player watch television / movies?

With your permission the player may use any electrical equipment in your home.



Should I allow the player to use the family telephone?

Yes for local calls only. All long distance calls must be made using a calling card or the player must have his own cell phone.



Should I allow the player to use the family computer?

Yes but only with your permission.



Can the player smoke in the house?

Yes but only with your permission. You can request that the player smoke outside the house.



Can the player do his laundry at my house?

Yes. You must allow the player to use your washing machine, dryer, and laundry products so he can wash his own clothes. You are not required to wash his clothes.



Do I need to provide transportation for the player?

No. The player knows that he is responsible for his own transportation.



Will the player have a curfew?

The player will not have a curfew. But you can request that the he returns to the house at a reasonable hour.



Do I need to be home when the player is at home?

No, but make sure the player knows he is responsible to lock up the house. The player must treat your house like it was his own.



Can the player have guests come to the house?

Yes, with your permission. But your home should not be a gathering place.

Is there a deadline for submitting the application?

Yes. The deadline is September 1, 2007. However, the sooner you submit your application the sooner you will be notified that you have been approved as a homestay host.



Once I submit or mail in the completed application, how soon will I know that I became an approved homestay family?

After reviewing your application you will be contacted by an HWB Director for an interview in your home. During the interview the director will look at the bedroom designated for the player's use. Any other questions you may have will be resolved at that time. After the interview you will be notified as soon as possible if you were approved as a homestay host.



What are Minimum Standards and Basic House Rules?

Minimum Standards are what the player can expect when he is hosted by a family. Basic House Rules are what the family can expect from the player.



How much is the homestay fee charged to the player?

The fee will be determined by HWB. The host family cannot ask for more money from the player. Expenses incurred by the family for the player are reimbursable only if the player asked the family to incur those expenses.



Can I terminate the homestay agreement?

The host or the player may terminate the homestay agreement at any time.



Do I need to give money to the player?

No.
