West Oahu starter Keisaku Itokazu improved to 5-1 on the season after allowing one run on four hits as the CaneFires defeated the visiting Honolulu Sharks, 6-1, this afternoon at Waipahu’s Hans L’Orange Park. Itokazu lowered his ERA to 2.82, and tossed 65 of his 103 pitches for strikes en route to notching seven strikeouts through 6 2/3 innings.

Michael Cooper came on in relief, and earned his first save of the Hawaii Winter Baseball campaign with 2 1/3 strong innings through which he struck out three without allowing a hit or run.

Ian Gac notched two hits and drove in a pair, while teammate Chad Tracy slammed his seventh home run of the season, a two-run blast in the fourth inning off Sharks’ losing starter Shingo Matsuzaki (1-2, 4.50 ERA). West Oahu (12-20-2) center fielder Craig Gentry also collected two hits on the afternoon, and scored a game-high three runs.

Honolulu (15-17-2) third baseman Brandon Snyder notched two hits to lead his squad at the plate, while Matt Wieters drove in the team’s lone run on a fielder’s choice.

Both squads return to Hans L’Orange Park tomorrow at noon for the second of a three-game series.
