The Honolulu Sharks scored eight runs in the final three
innings in a come-from-behind, 8-2 victory over the West Oahu CaneFires this
afternoon at Waipahu’s
Hans L’Orange Park.
With the win, the Sharks (16-18-2) moved into a tie for the
Hawaii Winter Baseball East Division lead with the Waikiki BeachBoys. Honolulu received two
RBIs apiece from Fuminori Yokogawa and Matt Wieters, the latter of which
notched his first triple of his professional career. Miguel Abreu and Nate
Samson each chipped in two hits and scored twice to supplement the Sharks’
offensive attack.
West Oahu (13-21-2) reliever Reid Santos (0-1, 3.98 ERA)
surrendered three runs on four hits, allowing Honolulu to take the lead in the eighth
inning. The Sharks then added five runs off CaneFires hurler Neil Wagner in the
final 1 2/3 innings to pull away.
Honolulu
reliever Chad Thall (1-3, 2.74 ERA) picked up the win after tossing two
scoreless innings and striking out three without surrendering a hit. Sharks’
starter Takuya Furuya did not factor in the decision despite only allowing one
run on three hits through five innings.
The Sharks return to Hans L’Orange Park tomorrow at noon
(Hawaii time) to start a three-game series with the Waikiki BeachBoys in a
pivotal battle for HWB East supremacy. The CaneFires meet the North Shore Honu
at 6:30 p.m., also at Hans L’Orange Park.
