Waikiki controls its destiny now thanks to a 5-2 win over Honolulu this afternoon at Waipahu’s Hans L’Orange Park. The BeachBoy
victory pushed the club 1 ½ games ahead of the Sharks in the race for the
Hawaii Winter Baseball East Division title, and with two games with Honolulu
remaining in the regular season, one more Waikiki win or tie will wrap up the
pennant.
Honolulu (16-19-2) still has
a shot at the division title, but needs to defeat Waikiki
(18-18-1) tomorrow and Sunday in order to earn a berth in the league
championship game on Monday, Nov. 19. The North Shore Honu have already
clinched the HWB West Division, and will attempt to defend their 2006 HWB title
against either the Sharks or BeachBoys.
Yutaka Tamaki (4-0, 2.22 ERA) notched the victory thanks to
seven strong innings through which he surrendered five hits and an unearned run
while striking out three. David Newton nailed down the ninth inning to secure
the victory, and earned his third save of the season.
Antoan Richardson doubled and drove in three runs on the
afternoon in support of the Waikiki offense,
while Justin Sellers also doubled in a run and played solid defense at second
base.
Sharks’ right fielder Fuminori Yokogawa launched a solo home
run in the eighth inning, while Kyler Burke led the team with two base hits.
Ryohei Tanaka (4-1, 3.02 ERA) took the loss after allowing two runs on four
hits through six innings.
The BeachBoys and Sharks go at it again tomorrow at noon at
Hans L’Orange Park.
