Mililani, HI— More than 400 uniformed youngsters lined the field for the opening day ceremonies for the Central Oahu Youth Baseball League,  on the morning of January 11, 2008, at Mililani District Park Field A. Representatives from Hawaii Winter Baseball, a professional baseball organization  featuring players designated by major league clubs in America and Asia, were on hand for the ceremony.

The scene was pure national past time, opening with the national anthem and a local Cub Scout color guard, and including introductions of local elected officials, followed by the ceremonial opening pitch by local dignitaries.

COYBL launched the 2008 season with remarks from Hawaii Winter Baseball president Hervy Kurisu, a Mililani resident, and Benny Agbayani, a former major leaguer and HWB alumnus who has a daughter in the league.

“One of these coaches is going to give you that small piece of advice that will help you be a success,” said Agbayani, who is remembered for the two clutch home runs he hit while playing for the New York Mets during the 2000 season.

Koloa, the HWB mascot representing the West Oahu CaneFires, delighted the crowd of uniformed young players by tossing HWB merchandise and memorabilia into the crowd.

The HWB league will return for its eighth season in late September. Stay tuned for upcoming community events, clinics and festivities!
