Kahala, HI—Honolulu mayor Mufi Hannemann and Hawaii Winter Baseball representatives were on hand to help launch the Waialae-Kahala Athletic Club’s youth baseball league during opening ceremonies on Saturday, February 23, at the Kahala Community Park in East Honolulu.

Stan Nuuhiwa, the league’s vice president, welcomed the 300 uniformed youngsters, who attended the annual ceremony along with their coaches and parents.

Koloa, the West Oahu CaneFires’ mascot, tossed baseball hats and other memorabilia to the crowd.  He was assisted by Major Mynah, the professional baseball league’s mascot.

Mayor Hannemann was on hand to offer welcoming remarks and signed baseballs and other items after the ceremonies.

The Waialae-Kahala Athletic Club’s youth baseball league has grown to 60 teams with 900 total players, said Nuuhiwa.  It includes the following age group divisions: 5-6, Shetland; 7-8, Pinto; 9-10, Mustang; 11-12, Bronco; and 13-15, Pony.

Nuuhiwa thanked the Hawaii Winter Baseball league for sponsoring youth baseball clinics during the professional baseball season which allowed players to meet the pro athletes and receive instruction from the future stars of the game who play in HWB. The HWB league was represented by Kyle Galdeira, Sports Information Director, and Kurt Zwald, Corporate Sponsorships Director.

HWB’s mascots also distributed coloring books featuring the four HWB team mascots.  Each mascot represents one of the characteristics of the aloha spirit—sharing, caring, respect, and trustworthiness.
