Clint Sammons, a member of Hawaii Winter Baseball's 2006
class, hit his first career Major League home run to help lead the Atlanta
Braves past St. Louis, 9-4, this afternoon at Turner Field.
The former Honolulu Sharks backstop started the game for the
Braves, notching three hits, driving in three—including two on his long drive
into the left field seats—and scoring two runs. Through four games with Atlanta, Sammons is
hitting .500 (4-8) and has yet to make an error on defense.
Sammons started the year at Triple-A Richmond (Va.), and through 81
games Sammons posted a .237 batting average and notched 18 doubles, a home run
and 22 RBIs. The Decatur, Ga.
native and University
of Georgia product was
promoted to the Major League club on July 28 to plug one of the holes created
by a recent rash of injuries affecting the Braves’ roster.
As Atlanta’s all-star catcher
Brian McCann recovers from lingering symptoms suffered from a concussion at
home plate with Philadelphia’s
Shane Victorino, Sammons and veteran Corky Miller should continue to share time
behind the plate.
Sammons saw action with the Braves at the tail end of the
2007 campaign, going 2-3 with a double in two games.
