Waikiki pounded out 13 hits en route to a 13-3 victory over
West Oahu tonight at Honolulu’s
Les Murakami Stadium.
Yonder Alonso of the Cincinnati Reds launched a two-run home
run with two outs in the third inning that sailed over the right-center field
fence, and gave the BeachBoys an early 3-0 lead. The University of Miami
product was selected with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2008 First-Year Player
Draft.
The CaneFires (6-7) got on the board in the home half of the
third thanks to an RBI double off the bat of Haruki Kurose that scored Brian
Friday from first. After Greg Burns struck out, Mark Hallberg singled up the
middle to plate Kurose, and pull West Oahu
within a run of the lead, 3-2.
The fifth inning proved bountiful for Waikiki
as Damon Sublett of the New York Yankees put the red-clad squad ahead 4-2 with
a solo home run just inside the right-field foul pole. After Alonso followed
with a single, and Roger Kieschnick doubled off the left-center field wall, Cincinnati’s Todd Frazier curled a three-run home run
inside the left field foul pole to put Waikiki
up 7-2.
Sublett finished the contest 3-6 with three RBIs while
Frazier ended up with two hits and a game-high four RBIs.
Waikiki (6-7) starting
pitcher Waldis Joaquin improved to 2-1 after surrendering two runs on three
hits, and struck out five. The BeachBoys pitching staff combined to rack up 12
strikeouts on the evening.
West Oahu starter Sean
Gleason (1-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits and three walks
through five innings.
The two squads return to Murakami Stadium tomorrow at 1 p.m.
for the finale of a three-game series.
