Jeremy Bleich Pitches BeachBoys Past Sharks

Waikiki starter Jeremy Bleich allowed an unearned run on three hits and struck out five through 6 2/3 innings as the BeachBoys went on to down Honolulu, 8-1, tonight at Honolulu’s Les Murakami Stadium.

Bleich (1-1) of the New York Yankees lowered his earned run average to 2.41, and pulled Waikiki to within four games of the Sharks’ Hawaii Winter Baseball East Division lead.

Roger Kieschnick hit his third home run of the season on a two-run blast to dead center field, to put Waikiki up 2-0 in the home half of the first.

The BeachBoys (7-9) extended their lead to 5-1 in the seventh inning thanks to a throwing error by Sharks first baseman Kala Ka’aihue that resulted in three Waikiki runs. With runners on first and second and no out, Marquez Smith laid down a successful sacrifice bunt which Ka’aihue fielded cleanly. But, the Atlanta Braves prospect unleashed an errant throw that ended up rolling all the way to the wall in left field, allowing Todd Frazier, James McOwen and Smith to score on the play.

Tony Thomas Jr. added a two run double later in the seventh inning, and Yonder Alonso also drove in a run on a ground out to give the BeachBoys the 8-1 lead.

Honolulu (11-5) managed four hits on the evening, and third baseman Bradley Emaus picked up the club’s lone RBI on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.

Scott Shaw (1-1) took the loss for the Sharks, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out five through four innings.

The two teams return to Murakami Stadium tomorrow at 7 p.m. for the second contest of a three-game series.
