Adam Loewen Joins CaneFires

Adam Loewen, a former Major League pitcher with the Baltimore Orioles, joined the West Oahu CaneFires on Tuesday as a prospect with the Toronto Blue Jays organization.

Toronto signed Loewen last Friday after Baltimore released him on Oct. 20. Toronto plans to use the 6-5, 235-pounder as a first baseman or outfielder after the fourth overall selection in the 2002 draft could not continue his pitching career due to recurring stress fractures in his left (throwing) elbow.

In three years Loewen appeared in 35 games for the Orioles, and compiled an 8-8 record with a 5.38 earned run average while notching 134 strikeouts through 164 innings.

The Surrey, British Columbia, Canada native gained notoriety for shutting down an MLB-laden lineup in Canada’s 8-6 victory over the USA in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. He also helped lead a squad from Surrey to the 1996 Little League World Series.

Loewen is in uniform for West Oahu at today’s game with North Shore, and the 24-year-old sports the No. 40 jersey.
