Tyler Henson smacked a three-run home run in the seventh
inning off North Shore reliever Matt Meyer to give West Oahu a 3-1 lead, and
the CaneFires held on for the 4-1 victory over the Honu tonight at Hans
L’Orange Park.
With the win, West Oahu
improved to 15-14 on the season, and increased its Hawaii Winter Baseball West
Division lead over the Honu to 2 1/2 games.
Caleb Gindl added a solo home run in the eighth inning to
give the CaneFires some breathing room, and cap West Oahu’s
six-hit effort.
North
Shore (13-17) got on the
board with a run in the first inning as Kurt Mertins walked, stole second and
came home on a Corey Brown RBI single. However the bullpen could not hold the
slim lead, and Meyer fell to 2-2 on the season after allowing the pivotal
three-run home run.
Kyu Hyun Moon notched two of North Shore’s
four hits in defeat.
Honu starter Jun Hyeok Heo did not factor in the decision
despite tossing five shutout innings through which he scattered three hits and
struck out four.
Sean Gleason (2-2) notched the victory as the West Oahu reliever allowed a hit through two scoreless
innings. Moises Robles came on to close out the ninth inning, and picked up his
fourth save of the season. Kyle Bloom, the CaneFires starter, allowed a run on
a hit and three walks, and struck out a game-high six batters through five
innings.
The squads return to Hans L’Orange Park tomorrow at 7 p.m.
for the second contest of a three-game series.
