West Oahu pounded out 17 hits, including two Cyle Hankerd
home runs, en route to a 13-3 victory over North Shore
tonight at Hans L’Orange Park.
With the win, the CaneFires improved to 16-14, and extended
its Hawaii Winter Baseball West Division lead over the Honu to 3 ½ games.
Hankerd led West Oahu with
four hits, including a pair of home runs, five RBIs, and scored a game-high
three runs. Teammate Miles Durham doubled, tripled and drove in two while Kyle
Peter went 2-4 with a home run and three RBIs.
The CaneFires jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning
thanks in part to James Skelton’s two-run double that scored Greg Burns and
Mark Hallberg. Skelton would later score on a Hankerd sacrifice fly.
West Oahu increased its
lead to 11-0 in the second inning thanks to an eight-run outburst in which all
nine batters reached base before the first out was recorded. Peter hit an
inside-the-park home run to right field that scored Brian Friday, and led to an
early exit for North Shore starter Sang Hwa Lee. After Durham doubled in two more runs, Hankerd
ripped a three-run home run over the fence in left-center field to put his
squad up by double digits.
The Honu (13-18) received two hits from Matt McBride, as
well as a double apiece from Ryan Kalish, Jason Castro, Jordan Parraz, and
Dustin Realini in defeat.
West Oahu starter Chris
Salberg improved to 3-0 after tossing six innings and striking out four while
scattering four hits and surrendering an unearned run.
Lee (0-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits
through one inning.
The squads return to Hans L’Orange Park tomorrow at 1 p.m.
for the finale of a three-game series.
