Honolulu relied on another
strong pitching performance as Kyle Drabek tossed six scoreless innings in
support of the Sharks who downed Waikiki, 4-1,
this afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium.
With the win, Honolulu
improved to 16-15 on the season, and moved to within half a game of Waikiki (17-15) in the race for the Hawaii Winter
Baseball East Division title. The division champion earns a spot in the HWB
Championship Game on November 16 at Murakami Stadium.
Drabek (1-1), a Philadelphia Phillies prospect and son of
former National League Cy Young Award winner Doug Drabek, allowed a hit through
six scoreless innings while striking out three. Kaimi Mead also chipped in two
scoreless innings for Honolulu,
and lowered his league-leading earned run average to 1.45.
Darin Holcomb and Michael Taylor each racked up three of the
Sharks’ eight base hits, including Taylor’s
solo home run in the eighth inning—his second long ball of the campaign.
After picking up its first run in the second on an Eric
Eiland ground out, Honolulu
took a 3-0 lead in the seventh frame thanks to a Kala Ka’aihue RBI single
followed by Holcomb’s double that scored Bradley Emaus.
Waikiki picked up its lone
run in the ninth inning on Roger Kieschnick’s solo home run into the trees
beyond the wall in right field. Kieschnick, a San Francisco Giants prospect,
led the BeachBoys with two base hits, while Alex Garabedian and James McOwen
chipped in a double apiece in defeat.
Waldis Joaquin (2-3) was saddled with the loss as the Waikiki starter surrendered an unearned run on two hits
through five innings.
Both squads have a scheduled day off Monday, and return to
action on Tuesday.
