West Oahu held on for the 6-5 victory over North Shore
tonight at Hans L’Orange Park.
Caleb Gindl paced the CaneFires (19-14) with three hits
including a home run, and teammate Kyle Peter added two hits as the Detroit
Tigers prospect improved his league-leading batting average to .370.
The Honu (14-20) picked up two runs in the first frame on a
Jason Castro RBI double followed by Matt McBride’s double that scored Castro.
The CaneFires answered with a run in the third inning on Gindl’s
RBI single, and took a 3-2 lead on Gindl’s two-run home run with two out in the
fifth inning.
West Oahu padded its lead
in the eighth when Gindl singled for his third hit of the evening, and Miles
Durham ripped a home run over the fence in left field to put the orange-clad
squad up 5-2. Matt Inouye, a former University
of Hawaii standout, added
an RBI single with two out in the inning to put the CaneFires up by four.
North
Shore rallied in the home
half of the eighth with three runs, thanks in part to an RBI single from Kyu
Hyun Moon, but fell a run short of tying the contest.
West Oahu starter Chris
Salberg improved to 4-0 on the season after allowing two runs on four hits
through five innings. Moises Robles tossed a scoreless ninth inning to earn his
fifth save of the season.
North
Shore starter Jun Hyeok
Heo (1-4) took the loss, surrendering three runs on five hits through five
innings.
The two teams return to Hans L’Orange Park tomorrow at 7
p.m. for the second game of a two-game series.
