Former Hawaii Winter Baseball hurler Joba Chamberlain threw a scoreless inning of relief for the Yankees and earned his first victory of 2008 as New York topped Toronto, 3-2, at Yankee Stadium Thursday night.

A former West Oahu CaneFire (2006), Chamberlain has been nothing short of brilliant as he continues to build on an impressive rookie campaign which included action in the postseason. Chamberlain owns a 1-0 record, and through two innings thus far in 2008, he has fanned three without surrendering a run.

Chamberlain was called up by the Yankees in early August of last year. The right-hander was elevated after an impressive minor league showing where he went 9-2 with a 2.45 ERA and 135 strikeouts through 83.1 innings in the Yankees’ farm system. Chamberlain was named to the league’s all-star squad, and appeared in the 2007 XM Satellite Radio All-Star Futures Game during last July’s All-Star weekend in San Francisco.

While he showed promise as a starter in the minors, Chamberlain began his Yankee career as a reliever. He will continue to come out of the bullpen, and should see action as a starter later this year, according to team reports.

As a CaneFire, Chamberlain compiled a 2-2 record in six starts, and notched a 2.63 ERA to go with 46 strikeouts. The 230-pound Nebraska native attended the University of Nebraska, and was drafted in 2006 by the Yankees as a first round supplemental pick.
