BeachBoys Battle Back, Halt Honu

The Waikiki BeachBoys erased North Shore’s three-run lead in
both the eighth and ninth innings, and wound up holding on for the 7-6 victory
this afternoon at Hans L’Orange Park in Waipahu. Jeff Kindel crushed a
three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning with two out to aid the
BeachBoys, who improved to 6-3 on the season.
Trailing 3-0 in the eighth, Waikiki
tied the game thanks to a three-run rally which was capped by catcher Michael
McKenry’s two-run double.
The Honu (6-3) regained the lead in the home half of the eighth
off reliever Harold Williams. But, as Ronald Hill came in for North Shore to
close out the game in the ninth, Waikiki rallied
thanks to back-to-back doubles from Emmanuel Garcia and Matt Inouye to start the
frame, and pulled to within two runs of the lead, 6-4. After a Josh Womack
sacrifice bunt moved runners to second and third, and Justin Sellers struck
out, Kindel came up with the game in the balance and drove Hill’s fastball over
the fence in right field.
Jeramy Laster kept the Honu in the game, going 3-4 with 3
RBIs and a home run. He is tied with teammate Mat Gamel for the league lead in
homers with three.
Waikiki reliever Brant
Rustich (3-0) picked up the win after allowing one run in the final two
innings, and the Mets prospect took the league lead for victories. Hill (1-1)
picked up the loss after allowing all four BeachBoy runs in the ninth.
Both teams go at it again tomorrow at Hans L’Orange
Park. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
