North Shore collected ten hits—seven of which went for
extra bases—as the Honu routed visiting West Oahu 9-3, and completed the
three-game sweep of the CaneFires this afternoon at Waipahu’s Hans L’Orange Park.
Mat Gamel moved into a tie for the league lead in home runs
(4) with a solo shot in the second inning to give North Shore
its first run. Teammates Chris Valaika and Stephen Chapman added back-to-back
solo home runs in the third inning to give North Shore
(9-4) its first lead that would not be relinquished. Jonathan Lucroy
supplemented the North
Shore offensive attack
with two doubles, while Jeramy Laster doubled and drove in three runs.
Brett Sinkbeil (1-0, 1.64 ERA) gained his first victory of
the year, allowing an earned run on three hits in five innings and striking out
two. CaneFires starter Erik Stiller (1-1, 3.00 ERA) allowed all three solo home
runs, and was saddled with the loss.
West Oahu (2-10-1) got its
pop at the plate from first baseman Ian Gac who crushed a two-run homer in the
seventh inning off reliever Sean Walker. Catcher Brian Jeroloman led the
CaneFires with two hits.
North Shore and the Honolulu Sharks open a three-game set
tomorrow at Hans L’Orange Park, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The
CaneFires come back to Hans L’Orange Park tomorrow at noon to open a three-game
series with the Waikiki BeachBoys.
