Kontos Leads Sharks to Second Straight Shutout of Honu

Honolulu starter George Kontos tossed five strong innings and struck out a Hawaii Winter Baseball season-high 11 North Shore batters as the Sharks blanked the Honu, 2-0, for the second consecutive game tonight at Hans L’Orange Park. Tyler Wilson finished off North Shore in the ninth inning for his first save of the campaign, and preserved the six-hit shutout.

At one point, Kontos (2-2, 3.00 ERA) struck out six straight and seven of eight batters swinging, and surrendered just three hits. Kontos, a prospect out of the New York Yankees system, threw 45 of his 63 pitches for strikes.

Honolulu (9-6-1) picked up six hits as well, but brought runs across on a two-out, Fuminori Yokogawa RBI triple in the second frame, and a Tyler Flowers sacrifice fly to right field in the third inning. North Shore (10-6) received two hits apiece from Mat Gamel and Stephen Chapman.

North Shore starter Shinya Nakayama (2-1, 4.00 ERA) earned the tough-luck loss, allowing both earned runs on four hits and striking out five.

Both squads have the day off tomorrow after eight consecutive days of games.
