Brian Bixler Excelling in Triple-A

After posting a .304 batting average in 17 games with the Honolulu Sharks this past winter, Brian Bixler continues to tear it up in the minors as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.

The 24-year-old shortstop was elevated to the Pirates' Triple-A affiliate--the Indianapolis Indians--to begin the year, and has not disappointed. Through 22 games, Bixler is hitting an impressive .338 with five doubles, a home run, and 13 RBIs.

Bixler, the 2004 Mid-American Conference player of the year at Eastern Michigan, was voted the Pirates' most improved player last season, and stands out as one of the organization's most promising middle-infielders.

According to various scouting reports, Bixler's range and arm strength are average, so he could see action at second base as his career progresses. This path might be the best to take as Jack Wilson has all but locked down the everyday role as starting shortstop with the parent club, and reserve second basemen Jose Castillo and Don Kelly continue to struggle at the dish.
