BeachBoys Dig the Long Ball, Contain CaneFires

The Waikiki BeachBoys scored all six of its runs via the home run in a 6-3 victory over the West Oahu CaneFires tonight at Waipahu’s Hans L’Orange Park. Waikiki improved to 11-14 and pulled to within 1 ½ games of the Hawaii Winter Baseball East Division lead currently held by the Honolulu Sharks.

Jeff Kindel collected a game-high four RBIs on a pair of two-run home runs in support of the BeachBoys. The Colorado Rockies prospect hit his first dinger over the right-center field fence in the game’s opening frame. He followed that shot up with an inside-the-park homer in the third inning that took an awkward bounce off a bullpen gate, and allowed the Marietta, Ga. native to chug around the bases in time to beat the relay throw to home plate.

Sean McCraw and Dan Murphy each added solo home runs to provide some insurance for the BeachBoys. Hector Pellot chipped in three singles and scored a run for Waikiki.

BeachBoys starter Yutaka Tamaki (3-0, 2.45 ERA) dominated the West Oahu offense, holding the CaneFires to two hits in seven scoreless innings in which the Hanshin Tigers prospect fanned six. CaneFires hurler Michael Cooper (1-2, 9.60 ERA) took the loss after surrendering four runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Ian Gac provided the bulk of West Oahu’s offense, smashing a solo home run in the eighth inning, and doubling in the ninth frame. The CaneFires fell to 8-16-1 on the season.

There are no games scheduled for tomorrow, but play resumes on Tuesday as the BeachBoys take on the Sharks, and the CaneFires meet the North Shore Honu.
