The Waikiki BeachBoys used a five-run eighth inning to pull away from and eventually defeat the host Honolulu Sharks, 9-1, this afternoon at Waipahu’s Hans L’Orange Park. The victory moved Waikiki (12-14) within half a game of the HWB East Division leading Sharks (12-13-1), and a win tomorrow would vault the BeachBoys into the lead.

Michael Wilson (pictured left) tripled, doubled and drove in a game-high three runs for Waikiki, while Jeff Kindel and David Maroul picked up two RBIs apiece. The BeachBoys did not trail in the contest after scoring a pair of runs in the opening frame, and adding the five-run eighth inning coupled with two insurance runs in the ninth. Waikiki’s first seven hitters had at least one hit and run scored per person.

Kyohei Muranaka (2-0, 2.00 ERA) won his second consecutive start, and surrendered just one run despite giving up nine hits in 5 2/3 innings. The Tokyo Yakult Swallows prospect threw 61 of his 95 pitches for strikes, and fanned six batters on the afternoon. Shane Lindsay picked up his second save of the campaign by not allowing a hit or run in the game’s final two frames.

Austin Jackson and Brandon Snyder each notched three hits including two doubles apiece in support of the Sharks, who have now lost three straight games. Honolulu starter George Kontos (3-3, 3.60 ERA) was saddled with the loss, surrendering two runs on five hits and striking out eight batters through 5 2/3 innings.

The teams return tomorrow at noon for the series finale at Hans L’Orange Park.
