Honu Continue Domination of CaneFires

North Shore improved to 9-0 when facing West Oahu this season as the Honu notched an 8-2 victory over the CaneFires tonight at a soggy Hans L’Orange Park. The win moved the Honu (19-7) 10 ½ games ahead of the Hawaii Winter Baseball West Division rival CaneFires (8-17-1) with 14 contests remaining.

Ian Gac led off the second inning with a solo home run aided by a stiff wind blowing out to right-center field to give West Oahu the early 1-0 lead. But the Honu scored runs in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to go up 3-1.

Brad Corley then launched a towering grand slam over the left field fence in the home half of the eighth frame to end any hope of a West Oahu comeback. Mat Gamel and Dusty Ryan each doubled twice in support of North Shore.

Honu starter Shinya Nakayama (3.00 ERA) improved his record to 4-1 and struck out 11 batters while allowing just one run on one hit—Gac’s home run. The Orix Buffaloes prospect threw 52 of his 82 pitches for strikes.

Jamie Hoffmann went 2-4 with a triple to supplement the West Oahu offense which combined to strike out 16 times. Kyle Wilson fell to 0-3 on the campaign as he allowed two runs on three hits in two frames of relief.

Both squads return to Hans L’Orange Park tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. for the series finale. The game, which happens to fall on Halloween, will be broadcasted live on ESPN 1420 AM (KKEA), and shown locally on a tape delayed basis at 10 p.m. on K5 (KFVE).
